The 2012 Prodigy USA Select team lead by head coach Bryan Zuluaga traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina on January 30th 2024 to start their Youth Copa America 2024 journey! The team consisted of nine players, five top players from Georgia, three top players from the Maryland/Virginia area, and Martin our Argentinian goalkeeper. 8 teams in this category were broken down into two groups. The US was in the group with Colombia, Uruguay, and Argentina, in the other group was mighty Brazil, Mexico, Canada, and one more team from Argentina.
Group stage results:
USA vs Colombia: 4-3 Win
USA vs Uruguay: 7-8 Loss
USA vs Argentina: 5-3 Win
(USA finishes top of group A)
After finishing 1st in the group the US team had one day off before facing Argentina's 2nd team who finished second in group B.Unfortunately the boys would come up short this time after missing several clear chances to score, with the final score being 8-3 in favor of the Argentinians. The result would set up a great 3rd place match against Colombia who played a great game in their semi final holding a 1-0 lead over Brazil until the last 20 minutes where Brazil would go on to score 4 unanswered goals to meet Argentina in the Final. The last day of match play would see Brazil beat Argentina 8 goals to 3 to become the Copa America 2012 Champion, the USA would go on to beat Colombia 5 goals to 2 in a match that was tied going into half time. The US boys had their best showing in their short history of Copa America experience, finishing in 3rd place out of 8 international teams. Lead by captain of team USA, AFC lightning (Georgia) player Jacob Samaniego #10 who was our leading scorer with 6 goals, and great performances by the rest of the group including second year USA player Aaron Delgadillo from Virginia, Mario Gallegos, Jamie Rosario, Jeremy Sandoval, Brayan Lopez, Sebastian Sarmiento, Marcos Ramirez, and Gk Martin. Let's go USA!!!
